Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon 2026: Two Hoan Bridge Crossings, Cutoffs and Race-Day Heat

The short version — The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon is Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. The full and the half both start at 7:00 a.m. CT on the south side of the Baird Center, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave., and finish at Urban Park on the Summerfest grounds. The full crosses the Hoan Bridge twice, at mile 7.5 and mile 23.5, with a 9:15 a.m. cutoff at the first crossing and a 1:30 p.m. finish cutoff. Two of the last three race mornings were already 65 to 66°F at the start and near 80 by noon, so plan for warm, not crisp.

Lakefront is the oldest marathon in Wisconsin. It grew out of the Mayfair Marathon of the early 1970s, and the Badgerland Striders turned it into the Lakefront Marathon in 1982. For decades it ran point to point from Grafton High School down to Veterans Park and had a reputation as a flat, quick Boston qualifier. Road construction ended that in 2023. The race moved downtown and added the Hoan Bridge, so any course review older than three years describes a different race.

What time does Lakefront start, and what are the cutoffs?

The race lists the overall limit as a 14:42-per-mile pace. The bridge cutoffs are the ones that catch people. Reaching mile 7.5 by 9:15 means 2 hours 15 minutes for the first 7.5 miles, an 18:00 pace, which is generous. The 1:00 p.m. mark at mile 23.5 is tighter: six hours for 23.5 miles works out to about 15:19 per mile. A walker averaging 15:00 has roughly seven minutes of cushion at that point, and the second trip over the bridge is uphill.

There is no race-day registration. Online entry closes Oct. 1 or when the full hits its 2,500-runner cap, and the expo is the last chance to sign up. Bib transfers and distance changes closed Sept. 15. The race puts it bluntly: no bib, no entry.

What does the course look like, and how hard is the Hoan Bridge?

The current route starts downtown, runs through the East Side and back, then climbs onto the Hoan Bridge for the first crossing around mile 7.5. From there it heads south through Bay View and two south-shore suburbs before turning around, coming back over the Hoan near mile 23.5, and finishing on the lakefront at the festival grounds. The race says more than 40 percent of the course runs alongside Lake Michigan, and the half and the full share over 10 miles.

The second crossing is the whole race. It comes about 2.7 miles from the finish, it is exposed, and there is nothing to break a lake wind up there. Run the ramp on effort, not pace, and bank nothing before it. For comparison, Portland the same morning has 873 feet of climbing spread over four smaller bridges, and Twin Cities puts its hills between miles 20 and 23.

How warm has race morning been on the new course?

FindMyMarathon's long-run average for the date is a low of 48°F and a high of 66°F. The three races on the new course have not looked like that average. These are hourly readings from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, the official NWS station for the city (observations via the Iowa Environmental Mesonet):

Race day6:52 a.m.Dew point8:52 a.m.10:52 a.m.12:52 p.m.Wind at noon
Oct. 5, 202565°F56°F70°F77°F80°F16 kt, south-southwest
Oct. 6, 202460°F42°F64°F67°F67°F18 kt, west
Oct. 1, 202366°F59°F70°F77°F83°F6 kt, southwest

Read that table as a warning. In 2023 and 2025 the start was already mid-60s with a dew point in the high 50s, and a 4:30 marathoner finished in the upper 70s or low 80s under clear skies. Even the cool year, 2024, was 60 at the gun, and a west wind around 17 knots built from about 9:52 a.m. onward. That wind matters most on the bridge.

It also shows up in the results. FindMyMarathon's share of finishers running a Boston qualifier went from 5.9 percent in 2023 to 4.8 percent in 2024 to 3.1 percent in 2025, while finishers held near 1,400 to 1,600 (1,420, then 1,586, then 1,592). Warm mornings and a bridge at mile 23.5 are a slow combination.

For this year, the NWS Milwaukee/Sullivan office's seven-day forecast issued this morning only runs through Friday, Oct. 2: highs of 64 to 69, with rain showers likely Tuesday night into Wednesday and a chance of showers Thursday and Friday. The Oct. 4 forecast appears on Sunday, Sept. 27, and it is the number to plan around by Thursday.

What should you wear for a 7 a.m. start in Milwaukee?

If the forecast lands anywhere near the 2023 or 2025 pattern, dress for the finish, not the corral: shorts, a singlet, a cap or visor, and a cheap throwaway layer for the 20 minutes you stand on Wisconsin Avenue. Tights and long sleeves are a mistake at a 65-degree start. A 60-degree morning like 2024 is still shorts weather for most people; arm sleeves you can push down on the first bridge cover the wind.

If you like leggings, pick a short or 3/4 length for anything above the mid-50s. Price matters less than a waistband pocket that holds two gels without bouncing, whether the pair costs $25 or $110. Our kit-by-temperature chart has each band. On a 70-plus finish, add sunscreen: the course is exposed along the lake for long stretches.

How far apart are the aid stations, and what do they serve?

Lakefront spaces its stops about every 2 miles, with water, Gatorade and portable toilets at each. The e-Gel energy gel is handed out at three locations only. That is thinner support than a big-city race; Portland, for comparison, goes to a station every mile after mile 16.

On a warm day, two miles between cups is a long gap. The practical plan: carry your own gels (four to six for a 4-hour runner), take a drink at every station rather than every other one, and consider a small bottle you can refill for the first half. If you are choosing between a belt and a vest for a course like this, our belt vs. vest comparison covers the trade-off; a race with 2-mile spacing and heat is one of the few where a light handheld or soft flask earns its place.

Where do you park, and how do you get back from the finish?

This is a point-to-point day inside one city, so plan the loop before you leave the hotel. Participants get free parking at two lots near the finish: the ICC Lot at 178 N. Jackson St. and the Lake Lot at 328 N. Van Buren St. Gear bags come with your packet and are carried to the Urban Park finish area. After the race, free shuttles run from the finish to the host hotels for half and full runners.

If you are driving, parking near the finish and getting to the Baird Center on foot or by shuttle is the easier morning. Leaving your car downtown means walking back from the festival grounds on tired legs.

Are there pacers, and who has won on this course?

Yes, the full has official pace teams, and it is a Boston qualifier. Unofficial pacers must be registered; the race warns that anyone running in the traffic lane next to the course can face penalties including disqualification.

The new course has already produced one record. Damaris Areba won the women's race in 2023 in 2:37:39, the fastest women's time in race history, while Seth Massot won the men's race in 2:24:51. In 2024 Abraham Kipkemei won in 2:21:53 and Alexis Mather in 2:46:42. The men's record, 2:14:09 by Steve Benson in 1981, dates from the old Grafton route. The 2022 race was canceled over permit issues.

How should you spend race week before Lakefront?

On a standard 18-week plan, this is the last full week of taper; our fall marathon countdown has the week-by-week table. For Milwaukee specifically:

WhenWhat to do
MidweekOne short run with 3 to 4 miles at goal pace; if Sunday looks warm, run it in the afternoon to feel goal pace at 70 degrees
Friday or SaturdayExpo at the Baird Center; Friday 3 to 7 p.m. keeps Saturday free for rest
Sunday, 6:15 to 6:40 a.m.Be at the start; full and half go off together at 7:00 and the Wisconsin Avenue corrals fill fast
Race planIf the 7 a.m. reading is 65°F or higher, start 10 to 20 seconds per mile slower than goal and hold it until the second bridge
