Wineglass Marathon 2026: Which Bus to Catch, How Flat It Is and Why the Finish Runs Warm

The short version — The 45th Wineglass Marathon runs Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. The half leaves Campbell, N.Y., at 7:30 a.m. ET and the full leaves Bath at 8:15 a.m.; both finish on Historic Market Street in Corning. Every runner reaches the start by bus, the last half-marathon bus goes at 6:30 a.m. sharp, and there is no bib pickup at either start line. Both the full and the half are sold out, with a waiting list on RunSignup.
Wineglass is known as the flat Boston qualifier with a glass medal. What that leaves out is that the start is foggy more often than not, and that the last three Octobers were close to 80 degrees by the time a four-and-a-half-hour runner reached Corning.
What time does Wineglass start, and which bus do you need?
| Time (ET) | Race | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 4:45 – 6:30 a.m. | Half | Buses load at Tioga Ave. (east of Cedar St.), Corning, and Pulteney Park, Bath |
| 5:00 – 6:30 a.m. | Full | Buses load continuously at Tioga Ave., Corning — about a 30-minute ride |
| 5:30 – 7:00 a.m. | Full | Buses load at Pulteney Park, Bath — about 5 minutes to the line |
| 7:30 a.m. | Half | Start in Campbell, the midpoint of the full course |
| 8:15 a.m. | Full | Start in Bath |
| 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Both | Return buses from Corning to Bath only |
The Corning buses are the ones that catch people out. The last full-marathon bus leaves Tioga Avenue at 6:30, which puts you at the Bath line with close to an hour and a half to kill. Staying in Bath buys you a 5-minute ride and a 7 a.m. cutoff instead.
The bib rule is absolute: you need it on your chest to board, and the race states there is no race-day pickup at either start, “No Exceptions.” Spectators cannot ride.
Is the Wineglass course really flat?
Mostly, and it tilts your way. FindMyMarathon's profile has the course topping out at 1,156 feet and bottoming at 917, with 392 feet of climbing against 594 feet of descent — a net drop of roughly 200 feet across 26.2 miles. That is a small fraction of Boston's 1,500-foot limit, so times count with no adjustment.
The route runs through Savona, Campbell, Coopers Plains, Painted Post and Riverside before crossing the Chemung River on a pedestrian bridge into Corning. The bumps worth knowing:
- Mile 1: a 40-foot drop off the line, which is where people bank time they later want back.
- Mile 4.75: a climb of about 40 feet.
- Miles 5 to 8: a 90-foot descent.
- Mile 14: a 30-foot rise, then 80 feet of drop over the next 4.2 miles.
- Mile 22.5 to the finish: essentially flat.
The half starts at the marathon's midpoint and drops only 40 feet net, by the race's own figure. If you have been doing your long runs on hills, the flat last four miles will feel faster than they are. Our fall build-up countdown has Wineglass at under two weeks now, which means the taper is already underway.

What has race morning actually felt like?
| Race day | 7:53 a.m. | Sky | 12:53 p.m. | 1:53 p.m. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 5, 2025 | 43°F | calm, dew point 43°F | 78°F | 81°F |
| Oct. 6, 2024 | 43°F | fog | 73°F | 76°F |
| Oct. 1, 2023 | 53°F | mist | 76°F | 78°F |
| Oct. 2, 2022 | 50°F | 8 kt from the NNE | 57°F | 58°F |
| Oct. 3, 2021 | 55°F | light rain by 8:53 | 63°F | 64°F |
Those are hourly readings from Elmira–Corning Regional Airport, the closest official station, on each year's race Sunday. Two numbers jump out. All five starts landed between 43 and 55 degrees, which is close to ideal. And in three straight years the afternoon ran 73 to 81 degrees.
A 4:30 marathoner who leaves Bath at 8:15 finishes around 12:45 p.m., straight into the 12:53 column. In 2025 that was 78 degrees under a 43-degree start — a 35-degree swing inside one race.
The fog is the other pattern. The 2024 start sat in fog with the temperature equal to the dew point, and 2023 and 2025 were saturated too. Wet air at 45 degrees feels colder than the number on your phone, which is why the bus wait is the coldest part of the day. The NWS Binghamton office's seven-day forecast for Corning reaches Oct. 4 around Sept. 27.
What should you wear for an 8:15 start in the Finger Lakes?
Split the problem in two. The bus-and-wait problem is 90 minutes in damp air in the 40s, and the fix is anything you will happily leave behind: a charity-shop sweatshirt, a trash bag with arm holes, cheap gloves. Whatever you wear on the bus should be something you would not mind never seeing again, since the start is in a different town from the finish.
The racing kit should be picked for the finish, not the start. For most people that is shorts or a short tight, a singlet or tee, and arm sleeves you can roll down by Savona. Runners who race in leggings tend to be happiest in a 7/8 or capri length on a day that ends near 80; if the inseam is the thing you keep getting wrong, leggingsizeguide.com's inseam-by-height chart sorts it out quickly.
A cap and sunglasses are worth more than a second layer: the warmest miles are the last ones, and the finish is in town. Our kit-by-temperature chart has the full breakdown by temperature band, and if you are driving over in the dark, the pre-dawn visibility notes apply to the walk to Tioga Avenue too.
Can you still get in, switch races or defer?
Getting in: RunSignup lists the full ($188.06 including a $13.06 fee) and the half ($177.39 including $12.39) as full, with a waiting list open. Both VIP entries at $372 are also sold out. Buying a bib privately is a disqualification for the runner wearing it.
Deferring: the 2026 deferral window, which cost $60, opened July 15 and closed when it sold out or on Sept. 1, whichever came first. It is shut. Refunds are not offered.
Switching: you can move between the full and the half for $40 plus any price difference. You cannot move to the 5K. If your build-up went sideways, dropping to the half is the one lever left.
Is there anything still open on race weekend?
Yes. The Williams Toyota Wineglass 5K runs Saturday, Oct. 3, at 8 a.m. Entry is $75.98 including fees ($59.96 for ages 5 to 9), and registration stays open until 7 p.m. on Oct. 2.
Where do you pick up your bib?
At the Corning Museum of Glass: Friday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Olympian Alexi Pappas is this year's guest. There is no Sunday pickup, so plan a late Saturday arrival around that 6:30 p.m. close.
How long do you have, and who holds the records?
The full has a 6 hour 30 minute limit, which works out to 14:53 per mile. The race lists 7 hours for the half. The minimum age is 18 for the full and 16 for the half.
The course records are 2:16:58 by Joseph Whelan in 2023 and 2:42:44 by Diane Neubauer in 2024. Last year 1,971 people finished the marathon, up from 1,816 in 2024, and 12.6 percent of them ran a Boston qualifying time (14.2 percent the year before). The finish medal is handmade glass, as it has been for years.
How does Wineglass fit next to the other Oct. 4 races?
Oct. 4 is a crowded Sunday. The Twin Cities Marathon goes at 8 a.m. CT the same morning in a much bigger field, and the St. George Marathon runs the day before with a 2,560-foot drop. Wineglass is the small-town option of the three. The Quad Cities weekend is this Sunday, and our Erie Marathon page from Sept. 13 shows what a flat course does on a sticky morning. Everything else is on the marathons index.
For the last ten days, the shoe rotation page covers when to retire your trainers before race day, and the night-before checklist is worth running through on Saturday, with the bib pinned before you sleep.
