Portland Marathon 2026: Four Bridges, the 6:33 Cutoff and What Race Morning Feels Like

The short version — The Portland Marathon is Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, from Waterfront Park at 1000 SW Naito Parkway. The half marathon goes at 7:00 a.m. PT; the marathon and 10K start together at 7:15. The full crosses four Willamette River bridges, climbs about 873 feet in total, and closes at 6 hours 33 minutes (15:00 per mile). Bibs are only handed out on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Oregon Convention Center — there is no race-morning pickup.

Portland is one of the oldest marathons in the country. The first one, in 1972, had 86 runners on Sauvie Island. The current course dates to 2019, when Brooksee (the company behind the REVEL series) took over and redrew the route, so a lot of the advice floating around from the old route no longer applies. What follows is the 2026 version, checked against the race's own information page.

What time does the Portland Marathon start, and how long is the course open?

The time limit is 6 hours 33 minutes for both the full and the half, which works out to 15:00 per mile for the marathon and a relaxed 30:00 per mile for the half. The 10K gets 1 hour 33 minutes. If you are a marathon walker planning around 14:30 miles, you have roughly 13 minutes of cushion across the whole day, so the bathroom line at mile 18 matters.

Miss Saturday and you do not run. The race says it plainly: no packet pickup on race morning. If you are flying in, book a flight that lands before about 3 p.m. Saturday so you are not racing the MAX Red Line to the convention center at 4:45.

Which bridges and neighborhoods does the course go through?

The marathon crosses the Broadway, Sellwood, Hawthorne and Burnside bridges; the half crosses two of them. Along the way the full runs through downtown and Old Town/Chinatown, loops the Pearl District and NW 23rd Avenue, crosses to the Rose Quarter, and later heads south through South Waterfront to Sellwood-Moreland, Eastmoreland, past Reed College and through Brooklyn before coming back over the river to finish where it started.

Bridges are where you feel it. Each one is a short ramp up from river level and a drop back down, and bridge decks can be slick when damp. Treat the ramps like hills: same effort, slower pace, and let the downhill give it back. For comparison, Maine the same morning has 858 feet of climbing, almost identical, while Twin Cities saves its hills for the back half. Portland's are spread across the day.

How cold is race morning in Portland?

The race's own average for the date is a low of 50°F and a high of 67°F, with roughly a 25 percent chance of rain. Here is what the last three race Sundays actually looked like at Portland International Airport, the nearest official NWS station (hourly observations via the Iowa Environmental Mesonet):

Race day6:53 a.m.7:53 a.m.Dew point 7:539:53 a.m.11:53 a.m.Sky
Oct. 5, 202553°F52°F49°F55°F62°FBroken clouds, dry
Oct. 6, 202448°F50°F47°F58°F63°FMostly clear, dry
Oct. 1, 202346°F46°F43°F53°F61°FMostly clear, dry

Three things stand out. First, none of those mornings recorded rain, even though "Portland in October" makes everyone pack a jacket. Second, the start has been between 46 and 53 degrees, and the wind at the airport was 5 knots or less at every start hour. Third, the warm-up is gentle: about 10 to 15 degrees between the gun and noon. Compare that with Maine, where two of the last four finishes hit the 70s. A 4:30 marathoner in Portland has usually finished in the high 50s or low 60s.

The dew point is the number to watch. On all three mornings it sat just 3 degrees below the air temperature, which is why the start feels colder and damper than the thermometer says. The NWS Portland office publishes the forecast; its seven-day window reaches Oct. 4 on Sunday, Sept. 27, and a real race-morning number will be worth more than any average by Wednesday, Sept. 30.

What should you wear for a 7:15 start on the waterfront?

For a 46-to-53-degree start with a finish near 60, most runners do best in shorts or a short tight, a singlet or tee, and something disposable on top for the corral. Gloves are optional; arm sleeves are a better call because you can push them down on the Broadway Bridge. If you prefer leggings, a 7/8 length is the safe middle for a finish in the low 60s. That holds whether the pair costs $25 or $120; fit and a pocket for two gels matter more than the price.

If the forecast flips to rain, the change is a cap with a brim and a thin shell you are willing to toss, not heavier tights. Wet leggings get heavy by mile 18. Our kit-by-temperature chart has each band, and if you are walking to the start from a hotel in the dark around 6:15, the pre-dawn visibility notes apply to the streets along Naito.

Where are the aid stations, and what is on the tables?

Portland front-loads the gaps and back-loads the support:

RaceSpacingTotal stations
MarathonEvery 2 miles from mile 3 to mile 15, then every mile from 16 to 2618
Half marathonEvery mile starting at mile 2.510
10KMiles 3 and 52

The drink is Skratch Labs Lemon Lime, and the gel is Crank Sports e-Gel. If you have never used either, try them on one long run this weekend or bring your own. The practical plan for a 4-hour runner: carry two to three of your own gels for miles 0 to 15, where stations are two miles apart, then use the course for the last 10 miles, where there is something every mile. Five or six gels fit in a waistband or belt; our belt vs. vest comparison covers which suits a race with aid this frequent (short answer: the belt).

Are there pacers, and is Portland a Boston qualifier?

Yes to both. The race lists 13 marathon pace groups from 2:55 to 4:20 and seven half-marathon groups from 1:30 to 2:30. Portland is a Boston qualifier, and runners who qualify get a complimentary luggage tag at the finish.

Realistically, about one in twenty finishers qualifies. FindMyMarathon's counts show the share running a BQ at 5.1 percent in 2022, 6.1 percent in 2023, 5.0 percent in 2024 and 4.5 percent in 2025. Marathon finishers rose over the same years: 2,313, 2,258, 2,562 and 3,009. Across all distances, KOIN reported nearly 12,000 runners on the day last year.

How fast do the winners run, and what are the course records?

The records are old and look safe: 2:17:21 by Uli Steidl in 1997 and 2:36:40 by Hiromi Yokoyama in 1991, both on the pre-2019 route. On the current course, Archibald Castell of Sweden won in 2:22:14 in 2024 and Rachel Peters won the women's race in 2:48:21. In 2023 Matt Spear won in 2:27:51 and Rachele Biltoft in 2:55:50. Nic Maszk and Luciana Lenth took the 2025 titles.

Those are local-race times, which is useful information: the front of the field is small, the corrals are not packed with elites, and a 3:10 runner will find themselves in a fairly open road by mile 4.

How should you spend race week in Portland?

If you are following a standard 18-week plan, you are in the last full week of taper now; our fall marathon countdown has the week-by-week table. Some Portland-specific notes:

Racing somewhere else this fall? Our other race-week guides for the same stretch cover Wineglass and St. George, and the full list lives on the marathons page.
